Sagittal PD-w TSE with chemical fat saturation (right) shows heterogeneous fat suppression due to magnetic field inhomogeneities. Sagittal T2-w STIR (left) provides robust fat suppression. Moreover, susceptibility artifacts are less prominent on old-school STIR images. It is very important that Radiographers be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of the various fat suppression techniques, in order to select the most appropriate technique for each particular situation in clinical practice.
