Structurally, gadolinium-containing contrast agents can be divided into two groups based on the type of ligand. Macrocyclic agents (upper) form a cage-like ligand structure with the ion trapped in a preformed central cavity. Linear agents (bottom) have an elongated organic molecular ligand that wraps around the ion. Both linear and macrocyclic agents can either be ionic or non-ionic.
