CSF appearance is not always the safest way to identify T1-W and T2-W sequences in brain MR imaging, because in many cases we choose to suppress the signal from the CSF. The easiest way to identify the T1-W image is to examine the relationship between the white matter and grey matter. White matter is whiter than the grey matter. So, white matter-white and grey matter-grey. In contrast, T2-W sequences have the opposite relationships with the grey matter been more hyperintense compared to white matter, which is dark.
