STIR images usually suffer from truncation (Gibbs/ringing) artifacts in spine (left image). These artifacts are particularly problematic in spinal imaging, in which they may artifactually widen or narrow the cord or mimic a syrinx. Optimized protocol (right image) provides much better spatial resolution and is free from this kind of artifacts (look at the medulla).
