(left) STIR MR image (TI 205 ms) shows weak fat suppression of bone marrow. (right) STIR MR image (TI 220 ms) shows stronger fat suppression. By modulating TI, it is possible to adjust the strength of the fat suppression desired: a TI that is close to the exact nulling time will have the strongest fat suppression, whereas a lower or higher TI will have weaker fat suppression.
