The main purpose of #proton_MR_spectroscopy is to obtain the concentration of major metabolites in the body while MR imaging is used to obtain morphological and functional information in the body. #MR_spectroscopy shows a spectrum graph, which is proportional to the concentration of metabolites, while MR images show a signal proportional to water content and relaxation properties of the tissues and lesions in the brain. #MRS can be used to visualize NAA (neuron activity marker), choline (cell membrane marker), creatine (energy metabolism), lipids (product of brain destruction), lactate (product of anaerobic glycolysis), myoinositol (glial cell marker, osmolyte hormone receptor), glutamine, and GABA (neurotransmitters). Alanine and few other metabolites can be visualized in different disease states as well. MRS graphs show the metabolite’s spectral location in ppm (parts per million). This is essentially an indication of how far apart they are from the resonance frequency (chemical shift). #MR_spectroscopy #SVS #single_voxel_spectroscopy #MRI
