The abdomen is divided into quadrants in order to be examined, and to reach to an anatomical differential diagnosis. In medicine we divide it into nine quadrants using two horizontal lines (Subcostal plane - level of 10th coastal cartilage, and Transtubercular plane - level of 5th lumbar vertebrae), And two vertical lines (Midclavicular lines). Sometimes we divide the abdomen into four quadrants especially in surgery, so we use only two lines, one horizontal (Transumbilical line - level of 3rd-4th lumbar vertebrae), and one vertical (Midsagittal line)
