Ventricular System

Ventricular System

The function of the CSF is to cushion brain and spinal cord, Compared with serum, CSF has ↓↓ protein, ↓ pH, equal [Na+], ↑ [Cl-] and [Mg2+], ↓ [K+], [Ca2+], [HCO3-], and [glucose]. It is produced by the choroid plexus epithelial cells, found in lateral, third, and fourth ventricles and reabsorbed into circulation by arachnoid granulations, which enters dural venous sinuses. The Entire volume of CSF is recycled 2-3 times per 24 hours transported via the ventricular system. Ventricular system communications [Lateral ventricle → 3rd ventricle is by interventricular foramen of Monro], [3rd ventricle → 4th ventricle is by cerebral aqueduct] , [4th ventricle → subarachnoid space via foramina of Luschka (lateral)foramina of Magendie (medial)] .
