Goitre

Goitre

This famous classical picture of a woman having goitre goes back to 1897. Sadly this goitre kept on growing before this woman seeks medical help, and when she was admitted it was already too late, she died two months after taking this picture. Goitre is a swelling of the neck resulting from enlargement of the thyroid gland. The most common cause was iodine deficiency which was very common in the 19th century.
