A cleft palate is birth defects presented by an opening or split in the roof of the mouth (palate). It occurs commonly along with a cleft lip.Clefting results when there is not enough tissue in the mouth or lip area, and the tissue that is available does not join together properly.Cleft palate can occur as complete (soft and hard palate, possibly including a gap in the jaw) or incomplete (a 'hole' in the roof of the mouth, usually as a cleft soft palate). It occurs due to the failure of fusion of the lateral palatine processes, the nasal septum, and/or the median palatine processes. Both the facial and oral malformations can be successfully corrected by a reconstructive operation.Photo by @armantorabi
