Hey, does anyone have any advice towards becoming a medical student. I’m only 16 and I have a passion for this field and wish to become a doctor but would appreciate all the advice/help I can get. ❤️

Right now your biggest focus should be on good grades and being involved in extracurricular activities and volunteering. The rest of this post is kind of a rough/general timeline of getting into med school, but check out the websites for AMCAS and AACOM. They have tons of info on getting into an allopathic or osteopathic med school. Try to get into an honors program during your undergrad years. That isn't necessary, but it will be helpful. Once you start college is when you can really start to build your med school application. Consider getting a job with clinical experience like being a scribe or a cna at this point. Also try to be involved in volunteer work and shadowing doctors. You should plan on taking your MCAT near the end of your undergrad degree. Make sure that you set aside a good chunk of time to prepare for this test, it's very important. In the second half of your undergrad years you should also consider getting involved in research. Most universities have a page of all the professors and their research projects so you can look them up and ask them about joining their lab then. When you start to apply for med school look briefly at their admissions requirements. All schools will want a letter of recommendation but some may ask for letters from specific people. They may want letters from physicians and professors. Also look for the schools that fit your vision of being a doctor. For example some schools really focus on primary care, or providing physicians to a rural or urban area. Other schools focus heavily on research, which would be good if you are considering being an MD PhD or a specialist. After you apply to med school and get invited to interviews, find out how they interview and practice a bit with a friend. Getting to med school is hard work but it is well worth it! Just keep working at it, don't get discouraged and realize that there are a couple of different ways to get into a med school, so it's fine if your application looks different than someone else's.
