Ascites can either be caused by portal hypertension arising from liver disease leading to an increased hydrostatic pressure. It can also be caused by reduced production of serum proteins resulting in loss of oncotic pressure due to poor liver function or due to chronic malnutrition. These produce a high SAAG. Thirdly it can be caused by an intraperitoneal malignancy or infection. This produces a low SAAG. There are some other rare causes but you’d need more information to determine these.
