Non-nutritive sweeteners, also called artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes, are substances other than sugar. They are sweeter than sugar therefore small quantity is sufficient to add sweetness to foods and beverages. US FDA approved eight non-nutritive sweeteners. They are aspartame, acesulfame potassium, luo han guo (monk) fruit extract, neotame, saccharin, stevia, sucralose and advantame.
